In response to the DVLA consultation regarding electronic glucose monitoring, CPT Operations Manager Gavin Miller collated responses from across CPT membership, concluding:
- CPT members agree with the proposal to allow Group 2 drivers to use CGMS for driving.
- Reasons for agreement with the proposal include:
- Implementation of CGMS will improve the process experienced by drivers currently monitoring only by finger prick tests.
- Use of CGMS allows better planning to be made around glucose levels by individuals, including more robust early warnings of potential adverse effects. Alarms can be set in case blood sugars reach certain levels, providing immediate information on the need to address potential issues.
- The apps / devices allow patterns to be shown, this can lead to a reduction in blood sugars overall, and gives greater, easier control.
- The proposal is seen as a positive step towards better road safety, if the system is properly implemented and adhered to.
- Further considerations put forward by CPT members include:
- Assurance may be needed around the prescribing of the glucose monitoring system by GP’s / NHS to ensure safeguards around non prescribed management of diabetes. Essentially, regulation of the supply of equipment to prevent the availability of copied / fake devices being easily made available could prevent such issues.
- There are some concerns over liability on the part of a vehicle operator, if a user of such a system was subject to an incident linked to the condition, such as an accident.
